David Purley was a true hero.
David Purley and Roger Williamson were friends since they'd been racing against each other in minor racing leagues.
The Dutch Grand Prix 1973 was the first Formula One race they both attended together.
During lap 8, Williamson's car suffered a tire failure and left the track to the left in a fast right-hander. It crashed into a catch fence and was thrown back on the track rolling over on the side. While still moving, the car caught fire. It finally came to a rest on the right side of the track.
Purley, who was driving behind Williamson, stopped his car and ran to the wreck of Williamson's car. He immediatly tried to get the car back on its wheels making it possible for Williamson to leave the burning car. Williamson himself was conscious and realizing what was happening. He cried for Purley to help him.
A little later, track marshalls arrived at the scene. Not being taught how to react in such a situation and not wearing fireproof clothes they didn't dare to approach the car. When Purley realized the marshalls wouldn't help him he took away a fire extinguisher from a marshall and tried to put out the blaze. Without success. Purley tried to stop other drivers which wasn't successfull because they thought it was Purley's car burning and he was safe. Williamson was still screaming for his life.
Finally Purley was pushed away from the scene and collapsed crying.
Roger Williamson died because of a intoxication by the smoke of the burning aluminium chassis of his car. A fire truck parked 500 feet away wasn't sent to the scene since it would've needed to drive the track against the right direction!
David Purley was awarded the George Medal in 1974. He quit Formula One in 1977 after a career-ending crash in Silverstone. Purley died in 1985 crashing with his aerobatic plane into the sea.
